Rat proofing is most effective when it combines physical entry-point work with reducing the food, water and shelter that support rodent activity around a property.
Inspect Doors and Thresholds
Check exterior, basement and service doors for poor fit, damaged sweeps and gaps. High-use commercial doors and older residential entrances deserve particular attention.
Inspect Utility Penetrations
Look where pipes, cables, conduit and mechanical lines pass through exterior surfaces, foundations, cabinets and utility spaces.
Check Vents, Foundations and Building Transitions
Damaged vents and gaps where different materials meet can create access. Repairs should be durable and appropriate for the surrounding construction.
Secure Trash
The City of Boston recommends sturdy barrels with tight-fitting lids, avoiding overfilled containers and keeping outdoor areas clean of food debris. Waste management is a core part of rat prevention.
Reduce Food and Water
Clean food residue, store food appropriately, avoid leaving pet food exposed and eliminate avoidable standing water where practical.
Reduce Shelter and Harborage
Remove unnecessary clutter and debris and maintain exterior areas where rats can hide or burrow. Shared alleys and common areas may require coordination with neighbors or property management.
Coordinate Rat Proofing With Active Control
If rats are already inside, exclusion should be coordinated with rat removal. The goal is to address both the active problem and the access that can support recurrence.
